On January 10, 2023, the Australian Government published 4 notices to announce the updates of the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC). Main updates are as below.
Adding 3 chemicals
As per Notice I, 3 chemicals are added to the AIIC in accordance with Section 82 of the Industrial Chemical Act 2019. Five years have passed since the assessment certificates were issued. Below are the details of the 3 chemicals.
CAS Number | Chemical Name |
2871677-90-4 | 1,3-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, polymer with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol, 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol, 3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropyl 3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropanoate and 1,3-isobenzofurandione, benzoate |
2870701-51-0 | Propanoic acid, 3-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-methyl-, polymer with N1-(2-aminoethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, dimethyl carbonate, 1,6-hexanediol, hydrazine and 1,1′-methylenebis[4-isocyanatocyclohexane], compd. with N,N-diethylethanamine |

Removing 2 listed chemicals
As per Notice II and Notice III, 2 industrial chemicals that were previously listed will be removed from the AIIC on February 8, 2023, as their introduction and subsequent use could not be managed under within the current risk management framework. Below are the details of these 2 removed chemicals.
CAS Number | Chemical Name |
118-74-1 | Benzene, hexachloro- (HCB) |
608-93-5 | Benzene, 1,2,3,4,5-pentachloro- (PeCB) |
Updating obligations for 2 listed chemicals
As per Notice IV, an obligation to provide specific information to AICIS will apply to 2 listed chemicals in the AIIC from February 8, 2023. The target two chemicals are:
CAS Number | Chemical Name |
84434-22-0 | Benzene, 3-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,5-dimethyl-2,4-dinitro- |
145-39-1 | Benzene, 1-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3,4,5-trimethyl-2,6-dinitro- |
Chemical substances that are listed in the AIIC can be introduced by any registered introducers (importers or manufacturers). According to the Industrial Chemical Act 2019, introducers shall apply for registration before introducing an industrial chemical to Australia during a registration year (goes from September 1 to August 31). For chemicals not listed in AIIC, introducers shall apply to the Executive Director for an assessment certificate for the introduction of such industrial chemicals.
