Indonesia Specifies Compulsory Language Requirement for Consumer Product Labels

From Oct 1, business entities in Indonesia are required to affix labels in Indonesian for consumer products to be traded in the domestic market, according to Regulation of Minister of Industry No. 73/M-DAG/Per/9/2015.

Small and micro-enterprises are exempt while larger enterprises must ensure all relevant products are properly labeled. Companies who fail to comply with the regulation may have their business license revoked.

The Regulation classifies consumer products into the following five major categories with detailed descriptions and required labeling information listed in corresponding annexes:

  1. Household electronic appliances, telecommunication and information devices

  2. Building materials

  3. Automobile spare parts and related products

  4. Textiles and textile products

  5. Other products

 Note: If there are established SNI (Indonesian National Standard) on the labeling of a specific product, the requirements set in the SNI shall be met.

Category V “other products” includes the following items:

  • Footwear

  • Leather goods (jackets, gloves, hand bags and suitcases)

  • Glasses (with frame)

  • Detergent

  • Formulated pesticides

  • Clock

  • Power cable

  • Copy paper

  • Gas lighter

  • Matches

  • Kwh meter

  • Lighting

  • Fuse

  • Toys for children

  • Tableware

  • Plastic products for consumers

  • Fertilizer

  • Printing ink

  • Paint
