NZ EPA Requires Submission of Hazchem Manufacturer and Importer Contact Information

From Nov 19, companies and individuals in New Zealand are required to supply their contact details to the EPA within 30 days after the next/first import or production of hazardous substances for commercial purposes, according to the Hazardous Substances (Importers and Manufacturers Information) Notice 2015.

This is the first EPA Notice published under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Amendment Act 2015 which empowers EPA to make new rules for hazardous chemicals management in a different way from regulations approved by the Cabinet.

The contact information submitted to NZ EPA enables the authority to communicate with HazChem manufactures and importers and make sure they are aware of the new rules and changes to the chemical regulatory regimes, as well as to perform more efficient compliance and enforcement functions. The required information includes:

  1. Name of the legal person;

  2. Full trading name (if different from a)

  3. Business/residential address in New Zealand

  4. Website (if available)

  5. Contact person’s information: Name, email address, telephone, relationship to the importer/manufacturer

The information only needs to be submitted once. In case of any change, the authority should be notified timely.

There’s no need to submit the information for:

  • An individual who imports or manufactures products for personal use only (e.g. Home-made garden spray from plant extracts to control pests in one’s own garden)

  • Small-scale use of hazardous substances in research and development/teaching in accordance with Section 22 of the HSNO Act
