Summary

The Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Hazardous Substances Assessment) Amendment Act was introduced to the parliament in July 2021, with aims to:

  • improve the process for assessing and reassessing hazardous substances; and

  • enable the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to make better use of relevant information from international regulators.

From August 2021 to October 2022, it has passed three rounds of reading. On October 31, 2022, it received the Royal Assent and came into force from November 2022.
