Hazardous substances need to be approved under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act to be imported or manufactured in New Zealand.
To establish if a substance is already covered by an existing approval, for example by a group standard approval, an applicant needs classify a substance's hazardous properties.
We are developing a training programme and tools that will help applicants understand the classification process and how to self-classify a hazardous substance.
This programme will be introduced through a number of workshops - the first of which are planned to take place in Auckland and Sydney in June 2013.
