On March 12, 2026, the 14th National People's Congress officially adopted the Ecological and Environmental Code of the People's Republic of China. This comprehensive Code integrates and standardizes China's existing environmental regulations into a unified legal framework, and will take effect on August 15, 2026.
Following its enforcement, ten existing laws will be abolished:
Environmental Protection Law
Environmental Impact Assessment Law
Marine Environmental Protection Law
Law on the Prevention and Control of Air Pollution
Law on the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution
Law on the Prevention and Control of Soil Pollution
Law on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Wastes
Law on the Prevention and Control of Noise Pollution
Law on the Prevention and Control of Radioactive Pollution
Cleaner Production Promotion Law
