On March 12, 2026, the 14th National People's Congress officially adopted the Ecological and Environmental Code of the People's Republic of China. The Code consists of five main parts and a total of 1,242 articles.

For industry operators, it establishes core regulatory mechanisms including the ecological environment partition control system, rigorous environmental impact assessments (EIA), and a pollutant discharge permit system. It legally binds enterprises to implement source prevention, process control, and comprehensive pollution monitoring across air, water, soil, and marine environments.
