On 9 June 2010, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) of China published a report on the management of toxic chemicals in China in 2009.
In last September, the MEP announced a notice on strengthening the environmental management on import and export of toxic chemicals, which improved the procedures for the environmental management on import and export of toxic chemicals.
According to report, in 2009 the MEP totally issued 220 registration certificates for environmental management on import and export of toxic chemicals, among which 198 were new registration certificates, 18 were supplementary ones and 4 were updated ones. The MEP also issued 3,888 licenses for imported toxic chemicals and 5,350 for exported toxic chemicals, covering 46 substances and 452 domestic and overseas companies. The total volume of permitted imports is 1,707,220.7 tonnes, 132.6% more than that of the previous year; the volume of permitted exports is 277,777.5 tonnes, 61.6% more than that in 2008.
Furthermore, the MEP approved the registrations of 101 new chemical substances and 3,818 applications for exemption from notification of new chemical substances. 76 chemicals were included into the Inventory of Existing Chemical Substances in China.
In addition, in order to reinforce the management of new chemical substances, the MEP published the amended China REACH (version 2010) in January this year and consultation for six draft supporting documents of China REACH.
To this end, China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) in cooperation with REACH24h China will hold the 1st stakeholders' workshop to discuss about China REACH six supporting documents On 25 June 2010 in Beijing, China. The officials from the MEP will attend the workshop.
