ECHA’s Investigation Finds Toxic Chemicals Present in Childcare Products

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) 's investigation, drawing on information from 48 different sources, shows that substances which are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction (CMR) may be present in childcare products (articles). Metals like cobalt and lead, along with phthalates like DEHP, are the most common CMR substances found in childcare products.

ECHA Recommends More Transparency in the Trade of Hazardous Chemicals

PFAS Restriction in the European Union: State of Play and Next Steps

ECHA is currently in the process of going through the submissions received. In September, a first plenary meeting took place between ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) and Socio-Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC), focusing on the substance scope and hazard assessment for the food contact materials and packaging sector. The next plenary meetings are foreseen in December 2023 and March 2024.

ECHA to Prepare Restriction Proposal on Chromium (VI) Substances
Oct 12, 2023
ECHA has received a mandate from the European Commission to prepare an Annex XV report for possible restriction of at least the chromium (VI) substances that are currently in entries 16 and 17 of the REACH Authorisation List (Annex XIV). ECHA will submit the proposal by 4 October 2024.

EU Introduces Regulation on Microplastics under REACH

On September 27, 2023, the European Union (EU) issued Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 (hereinafter referred to as the Regulation) to introduce regulation on synthetic polymer microparticles (‘microplastics’) under Annex XVII of REACH. The Regulation shall come into force on October 17, 2023.

EU Adds 35 Hazardous Chemicals to PIC Regulation

European Union added 35 chemicals in the Annex I of Prior Informed Consent Regulation (PIC Regulation), including 27 pesticides and 8 industrial chemicals. It shall apply from November 1, 2023.

EU Restricts the Use of Diisocyanates under REACH

Starting from August 24, 2023, diisocyanates can no longer be used on their or as a constituent in other substances or in mixtures for industrial and professional uses in concentrations equal or above 0.1% by weight, unless the user has successfully completed a training on the safe use of the substance.

EU Bans PFHxS under POPs Regulation

EU officially lists perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts and PFHxS-related compounds in Annex I to Regulation (EU) 2019/1021(POPs Regulation). The announcement came in the publication of Regulation (EU) 2023/1068 in the Official Journal of European Union on August 8, 2023. It shall enter into force 20 days after the publication.
