Starting from August 24, 2023, diisocyanates can no longer be used on their own or as a constituent in other substances or in mixtures for industrial and professional uses in concentrations equal or above 0.1% by weight, unless the user has successfully completed a training on the safe use of the substance.
The substances have been included in Annex XVII of REACH, with the restriction on their placement in the market already in effect since February 24, 2022.
Diisocyanates are known to cause respiratory and skin sensitization. They are primarily utilized in the production of polyurethane products like foams, sealants, and coatings. Restricting their usage is estimated to prevent more than 3,000 new cases of occupational asthma annually within the European Union.
