Australia Publishes New IChEMS Scheduling Decisions, Covering PFOA, PFOS and PFHxS

The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) recently announced the new scheduling decisions for nine chemicals under the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard (IChEMS). PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PeCB, HBCDD, SCCPs, etc. are listed in Schedule 7 as they are of the highest concern and pose the greatest risk to the environment. From the specified effective date for each scheduling decision, the DCCEEW will impose strict risk management measures, including prohibitions and restrictions, on the import, export, manufacture and use of these chemicals (whether on their own or in mixtures).

IChEMS and IChEMS Register

IChEMS is a national approach to managing chemical use, storage, handling and disposal in Australia, which will provide more consistent regulation and make it easier for the industry to choose less harmful chemicals. As per the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management (Register) Act, industrial chemicals circulated in Australia will be listed on the IChEMS Register in 7 schedules based on their environmental risks. Schedule 7 chemicals are the highest concern and pose the greatest risk to the environment. They are typically prohibited or severely restricted. Schedule 1 chemicals are the lowest risk.
