India Notifies WTO of 5 Quality Control Orders on Chemicals

WTO issued notifications to seek comments on 5 Indian quality control orders, the involved chemicals include vinyl acetate monomer, styrene (vinyl benzene), methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, maleic anhydride, and acrylonitrile. The Orders will be issued to ensure that these chemicals conform to corresponding Indian standards.

On June 6 and June 7, the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade under WTO totally issued 5 Notifications [1-5] to seek comments on 5 Indian quality control orders, which are under the authority of the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals in the Government of India. All of the Orders target chemical substances, aiming to ensure they conform to the corresponding Indian Standards. The information of the Orders, the involved chemicals, and the corresponding standards are shown in Table 1.

The consultation will conclude 60 days after the notification. And the Orders will come into force on the expiry of 180 days from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette. According to the Orders, the requirements shall apply to the specified chemicals in the Table, except those meant for export. 

The conformed products shall bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Any person who contravenes the provisions of this order shall be punishable under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
