Minnesota Requests for Comments on Determination of Currently Unavoidable Uses of PFAS in Products

China Consults on Revising Inventory of Hazardous Waste

On January 3, 2024, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) released a draft National Inventory of Hazardous Waste for public consultation. Once passed, it shall replace the existing 2021 version. Comments are welcomed until February 4, 2024.

European Commission to Revise PFOS Exemptions under POPs Regulation

On December 4, 2023, European Commission released a Draft regulation to revise several provisions concerning perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and its derivatives under the Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants(also known as the POPs Regulation). The draft is open for feedback until January 1, 2024.

ECHA Identifies Risks from PVC Additives and Microparticle Releases

The European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) investigation found that some substances added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, like plasticisers, may pose risks to people and the environment. To limit the use of these additives and to minimise releases of PVC microparticles, regulatory action would be necessary.

In November of 2023, China released a notice to strengthen standardized environmental management on hazardous wastes. South Korea designated 55 new toxic chemical substances and updated the GHS Classification List. Japan opened a public consultation to designate NPE as Class II Specified Chemical Substance under the CSCL. Thailand DIW proposed to list 147 PFHxS related substances as Type 3 hazardous substances. New Zealand called for submissions regarding proposed changes to a series of group standards to reduce the maximum allowable levels of lead in paint.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated proposals to revise the regulations for decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE) and phenol, isopropylated phosphate (3:1) (PIP (3:1)), two of the five persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) chemicals addressed in final rules issued under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) in January 2021.
