EU-wide PFAS Ban in Firefighting Foams Warranted

SEAC has adopted its final opinion supporting a gradual ban on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in firefighting foams. The restriction could reduce PFAS emissions into the environment by around 13 200 tonnes over 30 years.

ECHA Sees Broad Use of Alternatives for Chemical Safety Assessment

On May 30, 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published its fifth report on the use of alternatives to testing on animals for the REACH Regulation. The report finds that progress is being made in the increased use of alternatives to gather data on the properties of substances, in place of animal testing.

Korea Discloses Hazard Assessment Results of 37 New Chemicals (Updated on June 8, 2023 )

South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) is now consulting on the hazard evaluation results of new chemical substances registered under K-REACH. Hazard assessment results of 37 new chemical substances (Given No. 2023.1 ~ 2023.37) are to be added to Annex 1.

Peru Publishes Legislation on National Chemical Management

On May 28, 2023, Peru's Minister of the Environment (MINAM) approved Legislative Decree No. 1570 and published it on the Official Gazette, which marks the implementation of national chemical management framework. It establishes a National Registry of Chemical Substances (RENASQ) and a process for risk assessment of priority substance.
