Australia SWA Updates Classification of 1,219 Hazardous Chemicals on HCIS

In early March 2021, Safe Work Australia (SWA), Australia’s top body for work health and safety, announced the completion of an update of the Hazardous Chemical Information System (HCIS) [1], an internet advisory service it provides to help businesses and individuals find information on chemicals that have been classified in accordance with GHS requirements.

This update, which adds or updates the classification of 1,219 hazardous chemicals, was launched to complete the publication of classification information by the Inventory Multi-tiered Assessment and Prioritization (IMAP) program, an innovative framework assessing the human health and environmental impacts of previously unassessed industrial chemicals listed on the former Australian Inventory of Chemical Substances (AICS), now the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC).

According to SWA, for businesses and individuals wishing to see new and amended chemicals, they can use the advanced search feature to show chemicals revised in this update.
