Australia Updates Dangerous Goods Code

The National Transport Commission (NTC) of Australia released the latest edition of the Australian Dangerous Goods Code, edition 7.3.

Edition 7.3 of the code will affect a wide range of companies and people in the industry, including dangerous goods shippers, heavy vehicle drivers, companies that use and transport dangerous goods, and companies which provide training programs on dangerous goods transportation.

The new amendments of the latest version of code include:

  • Clarifying the description of the dangerous goods in more detail.

  • Adding some new materials to the list of dangerous goods.

  • Adding requirements on the size of markings on large packages of dangerous goods.

  • Explaining the requirements on the transport documents that are carried with vehicles.

NTC has been working to bring Australian regulations in line with its global counterparts. Edition 7.3 is another step NTC has taken to align the Australian Dangerous Goods Code with United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Model Regulations (17th edition). This makes it easier for Australia’s importers and exporters as they don’t have to deal with two different dangerous goods regulatory systems any longer. Less red tape means less time wasted. Companies involved in transporting dangerous goods should also read their own state laws to make sure their activities comply with the obligations.
