China Drafts the First GB Standard for Infant Feeding Bottles and Teats

The National Food Safety Standard for Infant Feeding Bottles and Teats stipulates the product definition, technical requirements, testing methods, inspection rules, labeling, transportation and storage requirements.

On Jun. 14, 2019, China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology opened “National Food Safety Standard of Infant Feeding Bottles and Teats” for public feedback. This mandatory standard will come into effect 6 months after its formal promulgation, and currently any comments should be sent back before July 15th.

Application scope

This GB standard applies to infant feeding bottles (including container, teat and accessory) which are made from one or multiple materials including plastics, glass, metal, ceramics, silicone rubber, and rubber. However, medical infant feeding bottles and teats as well as pacifiers are not included in the scope.

Technical requirements

The product is regulated by multiple technical items including boiling water resistance, heat-shock resistance, sealing property,translucency and etc., additionally their corresponding testing methods are also provided in the GB standard.

It is noteworthy that bisphenol A (BPA) cannot be detected in the final products.

Labeling

The labeling for infant feeding bottles consists of purchase information, material indication, usage directions (in Chinese) and safety warning. Regarding the purchase information, it shall basically indicate the following information:

  • Product name

  • Product type

  • Reference standard

  • Manufacture date or production batch number

  • Shelf life

  • Name, address and contact information of manufacturer

The imported products can be exempted from name and address and original manufacturers, but it shall indicate its original country/region, and the name, address and contact information of its agent, importer or distributor.
