China to Issue Three Water Based Coating Industrial Standards

The development of water based coatings in China has been fast tracked due to a government policy which levies 4% consumption tax on coatings with a VOC of more than 420g/L. Although China’s water based coating market is still in its early stage, three types of coatings are considered the most promising products that comply with China’s increasingly challenging environmental requirements. Recently, the Standardization Technical Committee of Coatings and Pigments (SAC/TC5) published three industrial standards for water based coatings to more tightly regulate these products.

The three standards are as follows:

  • Water based PU coatings (HG/T 4761—2014). This standard categorizes water based PU coatings into coatings for metal surfaces and coatings for inorganic nonmetallic surfaces and raises the specific technical requirements for both.

  • Water based epoxy anticorrosion coatings (HG/T 4759—2014). This standard applies to water based epoxy anticorrosion coatings on metal base and specifies the technical requirements on undercoat, intermediate coat and finishing coat.

  • Water based acrylic resin coating (HG/T 4758—2014). The standard categorizes the products into three types and stipulates specific technical requirements for each.

It’s widely believed that these three types of coatings will be the dominant products on the market in the near future by virtue of their environmental and economic performances.
