China to Implement 16 GB Standards in March, Involving Food Additives, Contaminants and FCM

As we step into March of 2022, 16 national food safety standards issued previously by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) together with National Health Commission (NHC) will come into force soon, involving food additives, contaminants in food, food testing methods, and food contact materials. These GB standards provide a legal basis for regulators, and also offer compliance guidelines for food manufacturers. Stakeholders are always recommended to keep an eye on the latest changes on GB standards, so as to take prompt measures and avoid unnecessary losses.

Noteworthy GB standards

1. GB 31607-2021 Pathogen Limit in Bulk Ready-to-eat Foods

Since GB 29921-2013 Maximum Levels of Pathogenic Bacteria in Foods was only applicable to prepackaged foods, GB 31607-2021 was newly set to address the related requirements for bulk ready-to-eat foods. Food used for catering, food subject to commercial aseptic requirements, and unprocessed or processed primary agricultural products are excluded.

GB 31607-2021 clarifies the definition and category of bulk ready-to-eat foods, and specifies the pathogenic indicators, limit requirements and inspection methods for bulk ready-to-eat foods that may pose risk to public health. Involved indicators are Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Bacillus cereus. GB 29921-2021and GB 31607-2021 together constitutes the compliance obligation for food's pathogen limit in China. (Check here to learn how to comply with GB 29921-2021.)

2. GB 19295-2021 Quick-frozen Wheat Flour and Rice Products and Prepared Foods

GB 19295-2021 will replace GB 19295-2011, and applies to quick-frozen food products made from wheat flour or rice as well as quick frozen prepared foods. It’s inapplicable to quick-frozen aquatic products with animal origin.

Compared with the old version, GB 19295-2021 mainly modifies the scope, terms and definitions, physical and chemical indicators, microbial limits, etc. In addition, on the basis of the old version, the requirements for the total number of colonies and coliform group in raw ready-to-eat products are added to the new version, and the indicator requirements for coliform group in cooked ready-to-eat products are modified. GB 19295-2021 also stipulates additional labeling requirements, that is, products need to indicate "ready-to-eat" or "non ready-to-eat" on the label, in order to guide consumers to adopt the correct consumption method.

3. GB 31604.8-2021 Food Contact Materials and Articles Determination of Overall Migration

GB 31604.8-2021 extends the application scope of overall migration determination to olive oil, demands higher precision, and introduces two methods to check the water sensitivity of the sample. Check here for more information.
