China to Restrict Heavy Metals and Phthalates in Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)

China’s MIIT has issued a draft mandatory national standard for TPU that sets concentration limits for eight hazardous substances, including heavy metals and phthalates, with a 12-month transition period proposed before enforcement.

On July 8, 2026, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released a draft mandatory national standard titled "Limits of Hazardous Substances in Thermoplastic Polyurethane" (TPU) for public comment. The draft standard establishes explicit maximum concentration thresholds for specific heavy metals and phthalates in TPU materials, aiming to standardize environmental and safety requirements across the industry.
