Chinese MEE Release Environmental Penalties Statistics

Recently, Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) announced the implementation situation of the Law of Environmental Protection and its supporting regulations and released the statistical data of administrative fines and penalties regarding environmental protection from January to August 2018.

Statistics show that in the first 8 months of 2018, a total number of 109,696 penalty notices were issued and the total fines reached over 9.1 billion RMB. The four provinces that issued the most penalties are Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shandong, and Hebei.

A lot of chemical enterprises and chemical industrial parks have been impacted by penalties, shutdown or suspension. There are numerous reasons, for example:

  • the enterprise is located in the ecological protection “red line” area;

  • the industrial park is not located a sufficient distance from a densely populated area;

  • The enterprise doesn’t meet the specific emission standards, etc.

ChemLinked would like to remind our readers that have manufacturing facilities or suppliers in these provinces to pay extra attention to environmental protection regulatory compliance to avoid any unnecessary disruptions to business and to avoid incurring fines.
