CIQ: Imported Hazardous Chemicals must be Labeled in Chinese

According to the Ningbo inspection and quarantine bureau, 65 batches of imported hazardous chemicals have been found illegal for non-compliance labeling since China strengthening inspection on imported hazardous chemicals from 1st February 2012.

The AQSIC announced in February that all the imported hazardous chemicals must be labeled in Chinese which indicated their hazardous properties, safety precaution in combination of characters, pictograms and encodings. And the labels should be pasted, dangled or painted on outer packages or containers of the chemical goods. It is laid down by Chinese compulsory technical standards that the label should provide information such as chemical identities, pictograms, symbols, cautions, precautions, logos of the suppliers, emergency phone numbers and signal words etc.

CIQ pointed out that most of the non-compliances can be ascribed as labeling violations. These chemicals were either unlabeled or labeled in languages other than Chinese. Even the chemicals were labeled in Chines, they were also found inconformity with Chinese national standards.

Since 1st February this year, 65 batches of hazard chemicals containers have been charged of labeling flaws in Ningbo Port, mainly concerned with 22 sourcing countries and 29 kinds of hazardous chemicals such as dimethlbenzene. Last month, Shanghai port has seized 1.55 million tons of illegal hazardous chemicals for same reason.
