New Guideline Reduces Animal Testing and Protects from Allergies Caused by Chemicals (Octorber 13, 2021)

On October 13, 2021, European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published advice based on a recent OECD guideline to registrants on how to combine different sources of non-animal data while assessing skin sensitization of chemicals, aiming to reduce animal testing while protecting people from allergies caused by chemicals. Highlights from October BPC Meeting (October 19, 2021)

On October 19, 2021, the Biocidal products Committee (BPC) of European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) proposed that d-allethrin should not be approved for product-type 18, such as insecticides, acaricides and products to control other arthropods, etc. The committee adopted a positive opinion approving the active substance BIT for product-types 6 (preservatives for products in storage) and 13 (working or cutting fluid preservatives). The committee also adopted positive opinions for nine applications for Union authorization. (Read More)

UK Environment Agency Released 2020 Data on Regulated Businesses in England (October 20, 2021)

On October 20, 2021, England released data on compliance ratings, pollution inventory, pollution incidents, enforcement and waste crime for 2020. These datasets support the 2020 ‘Regulating for people, the environment and growth’ report, which is about the environmental performance of regulated businesses in England and the work Environmental Agency does to regulate them. UK: Chemicals - Challenges for the Water Environment (October 22, 2021)

On October 22, 2021, the UK released a series of reports on challenges brought by chemicals for the water environment, especially mercury, cypermethrin, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). UK: How to Comply with REACH Chemical Regulations (October 28, 2021)

On October 28, 2021, the UK updated the guidance on how to comply with the EU and UK REACH chemical regulations when using, making, selling or importing chemicals in the UK and in the EU. UK REACH maintains EU REACH's aims and principles. US EPA Proposes to Extend PIP (3:1) Prohibition Deadline to October 2024 (October 28, 2021)

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to amend the regulations applicable to phenol, isopropylated phosphate (3:1) (PIP (3:1)) promulgated under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Specifically, EPA is proposing to extend the compliance date applicable to the processing and distribution in commerce of certain PIP (3:1)-containing articles, and the PIP (3:1) used to make those articles until October 31, 2024, along with the associated recordkeeping requirements for manufacturers, processors, and distributors of PIP (3:1)-containing articles. (Read more)

Washington State to Develop Action Plan for Phthalates (October 28, 2021)

Washington state's Departments of Ecology are working with the Washington State Department of Health, along with industry and environmental stakeholders, to develop an action plan that identifies sources of phthalates, and recommends actions to reduce the use, release, and exposure to phthalates in Washington. (Read more)

Canada Applies the SNAc Provisions to Trichoderma Reesei Strain ATCC 74252 (August 18, 2021)

On August 18, 2021, an order amending the Domestic Substances List to apply the Significant New Activity (SNAc) provisions of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 to Trichoderma reesei strain ATCC 74252 was published by the Canada government. Priority B (medium hazard) micro-organism strains on the Domestic Substances List (DSL) were given a medium priority for assessment. (Read more)
