New National Standard: Indoor Decorating and Refurbishing Materials – Limit of Harmful Substances of Interior Architectural Coatings

A new national standard GB18582-2008 Indoor Decorating and Refurbishing Materials – Limit of Harmful Substances of Interior Architectural Coatings has gone into effect since Oct 1st. it stipulates requirements on the concentration limits of several hazardous substances and the gas chromatography test methods for them. New standard makes 4 amendments on the former standard which was issued in 2001:

  • Water based putty is included in the scope of application as well as its concentration limit.

  • The total concentration limit of benzene, methylbenzene, ethylbenzene and xylene is added and is required to be less than 300mg/kg. It is a relatively strict limit.

  • The concentration limit of VOC of water based wall coatings is lowered from 200g/L to 120g/L.

  • The test method of total concentration of benzene, methylbenzene, ethylbenzene and xylene is added.

The new standard applies to all the water based interior architectural coatings and putties. Coatings that don’t meet the requirements are not allowed to be manufactured in or imported into China. So manufacturers and importers should be prepared for the stricter standard and avoid possible lost.
