Malaysia Amends Occupational Safety and Health Act (Updated on April 2, 2024)

The Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022 was passed by Parliament of Malaysia on March 16, 2022 and will come into force on June 1, 2024. The amendments to the existing Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA 1994) are aimed at providing workers with a safer and healthier environment.

Malaysia Considers Updating Guidelines on Storage of Packaged Hazardous Chemicals

Recently, Malaysia's Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Malaysia (DOSH) initiated a public consultation on updating Guidelines on Storage of Hazardous Chemicals: A Guide for Safe Warehousing of Packaged Hazardous Chemicals. Public views (especially chemical manufacturers, suppliers and distributors) are welcome until January 20, 2024.

South Korea Implements OSHA Revisions for MSDS Preparation Using CBI-Protected Substance Information

On September 27, 2023, the Ministry of Employment and Labor of South Korea (MoEL) promulgated the partial revision to the Enforcement Rules of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). The revised Article 162 stipulates that manufacturers and importers are allowed to directly use alternative chemical names and content ranges for CBI-protected substances to prepare the MSDS for a mixture containing them.

Vietnam Consults on Permissible Exposure Limits for 80 Chemicals at Workplace

On August 21, 2023, Vietnam's Ministry of Health released a draft Circular XX/2024/TT-BYT, which promulgates the National Technical Regulation on Permissible Exposure Limit Value of 80 Chemicals at the Workplace (hereinafter referred to as the Regulation). The Circular is proposed to take effect from May 2024 and is now open for public consultation.

Japan Issues Recommended GHS Classifications for 170 Substances

On June 29, 2023, NITE announced the recommended GHS classifications for 170 chemical substances, of which 47 substances were newly classified and 123 were re-classified. The classifications were made in 2022 based on the JIS Z 7252-2019 standard that adopts UN GHS Rev.6.

Japan Seeks Public Feedback on Re-categorization of Substances Subject to SDS and Labelling Requirements

The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has opened a public consultation period until July 20, 2023, seeking opinions on the revision of the Enforcement Order of the Industrial Safety and Health Law (ISHL). The purpose of the revision is to re-categorize substances that are subject to mandatory SDS and labelling requirements. It is expected to be finalized in early August 2023.
