Japan Issues Recommended GHS Classifications for 170 Substances

On June 29, 2023, Japan’s National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) announced the recommended GHS classifications for 170 chemical substances, of which 47 substances were newly classified and 123 were re-classified. The classifications were made in 2022 based on the JIS Z 7252-2019 standard that adopts UN GHS Rev.6.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and the Ministry of the Environment (MoE) have been classifying chemicals according to Japan GHS and publishing recommended classifications since 2006. Over 3,000 substances have been classified so far, but only some are mandatorily subject to GHS-related obligations in Japan. All GHS-classified substances are searchable through the GHS Mixture Classification and SDS/Label Preparation Creation System (NITE-Gmiccs).
