Australia Adds 10 Chemicals into the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals

10 chemicals were added to the Australia Inventory of Industrial Chemicals in accordance with Industrial Chemical Act 2019.

On February 17, 2022 and February 18, 2022, Australia made public two notices to announce updates of the Australia Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC).

According to Notice 1, 8 chemicals have been added to the AIIC in accordance with Section 82 of the Industrial Chemical Act 2019 (a.k.a. IC Act 2019). The Executive Director must list an industrial chemical on the AIIC if 5 years have passed since the assessment certificate was issued. Below are details of these 8 chemical substances.

According to Notice 2, 2 chemicals have been added to the AIIC in accordance with Section 83 of the IC Act 2019. The assessment certificate does not include a condition on the period for which the industrial chemical is permitted to be introduced, the assessed chemical can be listed into the AIIC even if 5 years have not yet passed since the assessment certificate was issued. Below are the details of these 2 chemicals.

  • 2-Oxazolidinone, 3-ethenyl-5-methyl- (CAS number: 3395-98-0); and

  • 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, butyl ester, polymers with alkyl methacrylate, substituted-methylethyl-terminated hydrogenated polyalkene methacrylate, Me methacrylate and styrene (AICIS approved chemical name)

Chemical substances that are listed in the AIIC can be introduced by any registered introducers (importers or manufactures). According to the IC Act 2019, introducers shall apply for registration before introducing an industrial chemical to Australia during a registration year (goes from September 1 to August 31). For chemicals not listed in AIIC, introducers shall apply to the Executive Director for an assessment certificate for the introduction of such industrial chemicals.
