The Australian government has deferred commencement of the new AICIS (new Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme) until 1 July 2019. The current regulatory framework for industrial chemicals (NICNAS) will remain effective until AICIS goes into effect.
The deferral of implementation will allow regulated entities to prepare adequately for compliance, and the authority sufficient time to consult on the detailed rules.
As for the new commencement date for AICIS, it is to be debated in the Senate later this year, together with the legislative package to establish AICIS.
Noticeably, the new commencement date also means that the ban of testing cosmetics on animals (included in the Industrial Chemicals Bill 2017) will also be delayed until 1 July 2019.
Before June, NICNAS has consulted parts of Australia’s reforms to the NICNAS- General Rules (draft), Categorization Guidelines (draft), and Transitional Rules (draft)- for public feedback. Now the consultation is closed.
