Canada Assesses 14 substances in Tricyclic Sesquiterpenes and Triterpenoids Group

The assessment is conducted under the Chemical Management Plan (CMP) to determine whether these substances present or may present a risk to the environment or to human health.

On March 1, 2025, Health Canada (HC) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) published a Draft Assessment for 14 substances in the Tricyclic Sesquiterpenes and Triterpenoids Group. Stakeholders may submit comments until April 30, 2025.

Within this group are the following substances:

  • Cedarwood oil (CAS No. 8000-27-9)

  • Texan cedarwood oil (CAS No. 68990-83-0)

  • Enoxolone (CAS No. 471-53-4)

  • Mimosa oil (CAS No. 8031-03-6)

  • Ivy extract (CAS No. 84082-54-2)

  • Alpha-cedrene (CAS No. 469-61-4)

  • Thujopsene (CAS No. 470-40-6)

  • Alpha-gurjunene (CAS No. 489-40-7)

  • Beta-patchoulene (CAS No. 514-51-2)

  • Beta-cedrene (CAS No. 546-28-1)

  • T&T cedarwood oil (CAS No. 68608-32-2)

  • Amboryl acetate (CAS No. 59056-62-1)

  • Allantoin glycyrrhetinic acid (CAS No. 4572-09-2)

  • American ginseng extract (CAS No. 90045-38-8)

Considering all the information presented in this draft assessment, it is proposed to add cedarwood oil, Texan cedarwood oil, enoxolone, mimosa oil, and ivy extract to Part 2 of the List of Toxic Substances (Schedule 1 to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act). A risk management scope document for these substances was also issued to initiate discussions with stakeholders on the development of risk management options.

In addition, it is proposed to conclude that the remaining nine substances do not meet any of the criteria set out in section 64 of the Act, thus no further action shall be taken.
