On September 15, 2021, China's Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)[1] released the formulation and revision plan[2] for 197 carbon peak-related industry standards for public comments, including Technical Specification for Carbon Emission Verification in Petroleum and Chemical Industry. The deadline for submitting comments is October 15, 2021.
These 197 carbon peak-related standards cover 10 industries, of which 161 standards belong to the category of energy conservation and comprehensive utilization, covering the following industries:
Chemical industry
Petrochemical industry
Iron and steel industry
Non-ferrous industry
Building materials industry
Rare earth industry
Light Industry
Textile Industry
Electronic industry
The remaining 36 standards involve methods, of which 2 standards belong to the textile industry and 34 standards belong to the communication industry.
The formulation and revision of the carbon peak standards for these 10 industries mainly focus on carbon emission verification, and carbon product footprint and carbon emission management. With the establishment of these standards, these industries, in addition to the electronic industry that has been incorporated into the carbon market, will gradually be incorporated into the carbon market, which will further contribute to the achievement of the carbon peak and neutrality goals.
Promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of traditional manufacturing industries is essential for China's high-quality economic development. The MIIT will continue to strictly control new production capacity, improve the green manufacturing system, build a green low-carbon technology system, and promote the green transformation of key industries such as cement.
