Japan Updates Priority Assessment Chemical Substances List

Japan announced 22 newly classified Priority Assessment Chemical Substances (PACs) in the Japan Government Gazette issued on 20 Dec 2013.

Despite adding new PACs into the list, it is also announced in the gazette the elimination of two former PACs from the list. The serial number, official MITI referencing number, Japanese name and classifying date of those substances were given in the Three Ministries (MOE, METI and MHLW) Joint Order 4 and 5 in the Gazette. Table below captures the key features of the concerned substances:

PACs are managed under Japan Chemical Substances Control Law (CSCL) and subject to a number of notifying and reporting obligations to the government as well as the consumers  (ChemLinked news release 29 Mar 2013). The PACs list was last amended on March this year by adding sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate and 4-bromo-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrrole-3-carbonitrile into the list. Currently, there are totaling 160 substances in the Japan PACs list with 163 substances once classified and 3 being excluded from the list over time.
