Japan Updates Priority Assessment Chemical Substances List

PAC List was updated, 4 substances added and 13 removed.

On April 1, 2022, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced the addition of four substances1 to the list of Priority Assessment Chemical Substances (PACs) under the country’s Chemical Substance Control Law (CSCL)2. Another notice issued on the previous day made public the removal of thirteen substances3 from it.

This brings the total number of PACs to 220 (some deleted or grouped under one single entry in the past years). The full list of PACs is accessible here4.

Under the framework of CSCL, chemicals with potential risks of long-term toxicity for humans or the environment may be designated as PACs. Although both General Chemical Substances and PACs under Japan CSCL require annual reporting if they are manufactured or imported above 1 ton/year, more information is required for PACs.

It should be noted that the 13 deleted substances and the 4 added substances can be reported as general chemicals this year.
