ECHA: A New Substance Added to the Candidate List (June 10, 2022)
On June 10, 2022, the European Chemicals Agency issued a notice that a new substance ‘N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide’ (CAS No. 924-42-5) has been added to the Candidate List as it may cause cancer or genetic defects. The Candidate List now has 224 entries – some are groups of chemicals, so the overall number of impacted chemicals is higher. (Read more)
European Commission Revised the Definition of Nanomaterials (June 10, 2022)
On June 10, 2022, the European Commission revised the definition of nanomaterials in a new Recommendation. The new definition replaces the initial definition of 2011. The changes were developed following a comprehensive review, and should allow easier and more efficient implementation, but will not significantly affect the scope of identified nanomaterials. ECHA Suggests Conducting Immediate Risk Management for over 300 Harmful Chemicals (June 17, 2022)
On June 17, 2022, the European Chemicals Agency announced that ECHA’s fourth report under its Integrated Regulatory Strategy had been released. Assessing chemicals in groups has sped up authorities’ work, with assessments for 1,900 substances finalized in 2021. For around 300 of these, risk management actions could begin immediately. European Commission Welcomes Political Agreement Reached on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Waste (June 21, 2022)
The European Commission welcomes the political agreement reached on June 20 of 2022 between the European Parliament and the Council on the Commission’s proposal to protect human health and the environment from Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) - a set of very harmful chemicals that can be found in some waste streams. Existing limits have been tightened for five substances and new limits have been agreed for four new substances. (Read more)
EU Further Revises Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) (June 22, 2022)

EPA Issues First Test Order Under National Testing Strategy for PFAS in Commercial Fire Fighting Foam and Other Uses (June 6, 2022)
On June 6, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap issued the first in a series of Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) test orders to require companies to conduct and submit testing on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). When EPA announced its Strategic Roadmap to confront PFAS contamination nationwide, the agency also released the National PFAS Testing Strategy to help identify PFAS data needs and require testing to fill those gaps. EPA Announces New Drinking Water Health Advisories for PFAS Chemicals (June 15, 2022)
On June 15, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released four drinking water health advisories for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the latest action under President Biden’s action plan to deliver clean water and Administrator Regan’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap. EPA also announced that it is inviting states and territories to apply for $1 billion – the first of $5 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grant funding – to address PFAS and other emerging contaminants in drinking water, specifically in small or disadvantaged communities. EPA Announces $18 Million for Training and Technical Assistance for Small, Rural, and Tribal Wastewater Improvements (June 24, 2022)
On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced up to $18 Million in available federal funding to build the pipeline of Technical Assistance (TA) providers that can serve rural, small and Tribal municipalities through the Clean Water Act Prevention, Reduction, and Elimination of Pollution Grant Program. Canada Publishes the Draft Framework for the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials (June 17, 2022)

Canada Publishes the Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations (June 22, 2022)
On June 22, 2022, Environment and Climate Change Canada published the Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations in the Canada Gazette, Part II: Vol. 156, No. 13 – June 22, 2022. These regulations prohibit the manufacture, import, and sale of 6 categories of single-use plastics. These regulations also provide exemptions to accommodate people with disabilities. (Read more)
Colombia
Colombia Starts Registration of Hazardous Chemical Substances
On May 31, 2022, Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce (MINCIT) issued the Circular 18 announcing the launch of the online registration system for industrial chemical substances identified as hazardous according to GHS. The deadline for companies to registerer their chemicals is May 30, 2025. The first National Inventory of Industrial Chemical Substances will be created based on the chemicals registered over the three years. (CL news)
