EFSA and ECHA Update Timelines for Glyphosate Re-assessments (May 10, 2022)
EFSA and ECHA have revised the timeline for the remaining steps in the re-assessment process of glyphosate. ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) will discuss the hazard classification of glyphosate during its plenary meeting on May 30-31. RAC’s opinion will be made available to EFSA and published on ECHA’s website within 8-10 weeks (i.e. end of July to mid-August 2022). EFSA will consider the RAC opinion during the peer review of the dRAR. (Read more)
EU Revises Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) (May 17, 2022)
On May 17, 2022, the European Parliament (EP) approved the amendments of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) presented by Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), which will come into force on January 1, 2023. The Commission aims to protect human health and the environment by eliminating or restricting the production and use of POPs, as defined in the Stockholm Convention. This act concerns PFOA, its salts and PFOA-related compounds (included in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021). It amends the PFOA concentration as an unintentional trace contaminant in substances, mixtures and articles, and removes a specific exemption that is no longer needed in the EU. (Read more)
ECHA: No Change Proposed to Hazard Classification of Glyphosate (May 30, 2022)
ECHA's Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) agrees to keep glyphosate’s current classification as causing serious eye damage and being toxic to aquatic life. Based on a wide-ranging review of scientific evidence, the committee again concludes that classifying glyphosate as a carcinogen is not justified. (Read more)

UK: Audit Report on Regulating after EU Exit (May 18, 2022)
In May of 2022, an audit report by the Comptroller and Auditor General was issued. This report is on the regulating changes in UK after EU Exit. According to the report, it will take four more years before the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reaches the full capacity it has planned for its post-Brexit operations and there is a risk that regulatory decisions could be delayed. EPA Proposes Rule to Update Confidential Business Information Requirements under TSCA (May 12, 2022)
On May 12, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a proposed rule relating to the assertion and maintenance of confidential business information (CBI) claims under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The proposed rule includes new and amended requirements that, if finalized, would increase transparency, modernize reporting and review procedures, and ensure consistency with the 2016 amendments to TSCA. EPA Adds Five PFAS Chemicals to List of Regional Screening and Removal Management Levels to Protect Human Health and the Environment (May 18, 2022)
On May 18, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took an important step forward to protect people from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by adding five PFAS chemicals for a total of six PFAS chemicals to a list of risk-based values that help EPA determine if response or remediation activities are needed. EPA Extends Comment Period for Proposed Rule to Ban Ongoing Uses of Asbestos (May 24, 2022)
On May 24, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extended the public comment period an additional 30 days until July 13, 2022 for the proposed rule to prohibit ongoing uses of chrysotile asbestos to give stakeholders more time to review the proposed regulation and prepare comments. EPA Announces Federal Working Group to Strengthen Coordination on Water Reuse and Integrated Water Resources Management Approaches (May 26, 2022)
This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a Water Reuse Interagency Working Group, which is composed of senior officials from 15 federal agencies, and is charged with developing and coordinating actions, tools, and resources to advance water reuse across the country. EPA will capture Working Group activities and findings in a biannual report to Congress, beginning in 2024. The Working Group will remain active until at least 2028 and can be extended at the discretion of the Chair. (Read more)

Canada Publishes the Final Screening Assessment for Silanamine, 1,1,1-trimethyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)-, hydrolysis products with silica (May 14, 2022)
On May 14, 2022, Canada published the Final Screening Assessment for Silanamine, 1,1,1-trimethyl-N-(trimethylsilyl)-, hydrolysis products with silica. The substances were identified for action under the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP). The conclusion on section 64 criteria is that it does not meet the requirements. (Read more)
Canada Publishes Proposed Prohibition of Certain Toxic Substances Regulations (May 14, 2022)
On May 14, 2022, the proposed Prohibition of Certain Toxic Substances Regulations 2022 were published in the Canada Gazette, Part l, for a 75-day public comment period ending on July 28, 2022. The substances included in the proposed regulatory changes are perfluorooctane sulfonate, its salts and its precursors (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid, its salts and precursors (PFOA), long chain perfluorocarboxylic acids, their salts and precursors (LC-PFCAs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), Dechlorane Plus (DP) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE). On May 27, 2022, Canada published performance measurement evaluation reports for: 1,3-Butadiene, 2-methyl-, (Isoprene), 2-Butanone, oxime (Butanone oxime), 2-Naphthalenol, 1-[(4-methyl-2-nitrophenyl)azo]- (Pigment Red 3), Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Bisphenol A (BPA), Lead, Mercury, Nonylphenol and its ethoxylates and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
