From April 30, 2025, importers, manufacturers and suppliers must ensure that hazardous substances meet the label, packaging and SDS requirements of the following notices:
Hazardous Substances (Labelling Notice) 2017 – EPA Consolidation 30 April 2021
Hazardous Substances (Safety Data Sheets Notice) 2017 – EPA Consolidation 30 April 2021
Hazardous Substances (Packaging Notice) 2017 – EPA Consolidation 30 April 2021
New Zealand’s Environmental Protection Authority implemented the Labelling and SDS Notices in 2017 which required compliance with GHS 5. The notices were updated in 2021 to mandate compliance with GHS 7, allowing a four-year transitional period ending on April 30, 2025 to give the industry time to update labels and SDS to the required GHS format.
Additionally, full compliance with the 2021 Packaging Notice is required by the same date, aligning better with international standards for the transport of dangerous goods and child-resistant packaging.
