South Korea Updates Exposure Factors for Risk Assessment of Risk Concerned Products

Risk assessment of risk concerned products is necessary under K-REACH to prevent risk to human health and the environment which may occur due to hazardous chemical substances contained in products. To assess exposure and risk for consumers, the exposure factors of the risk concerned products are provided by the authority.

Issued on 15 Nov 2017 by NIER Notice No. 2017-401, exposure factors for four risk concerned products were newly provided for public comments until 5 Dec 2017, including:

  • windshield washer fluids for automobiles

  • candle

  • dehumidifying agent for home use

  • engine antifreeze coolants.

The four products were newly designated by MoE as risk concerned products in August this year.

In addition, more exposure factors supplemented for the six risk concerned products listed below are also under public consultation.

  • cleaners

  • adhesives

  • Coating agents

  • Synthetic detergents

  • Bleaching agents

  • Fabric softeners

The updates of exposure factors for the six products were prompted by a study carried out in 2013. Based on survey data obtained from 3,000 participants in South Korea, a database of the usage patterns, frequency, amount of product per use, time spent during use, etc. of the above products were constructed.

The details of exposure factors can be downloaded here (in Korean). All updates are highlighted in red.

These exposure factor data will be used to perform risk assessment and set safety and labelling standards for these products.
