Two Standards for Paper as Food Contact Material are Drafted for Public Comments

On 31 July, China's "Standardization Technical Committee of Papermaking Industry" announced five draft standards for paper (subject to public consultation), two of which are concerned with paper used for food packaging and tableware.

As food contact materials, PE coated paper, PE paperboard and paper pulp molding tableware are in widespread use by resulting in significant consumer exposure. However, the absence of corresponding standards has made both authorities and industry alike uncertain of quality and safety obligations especially those with implications for human health.

The listed recommended national standards have been drafted to fill these obvious regulatory loopholes. The main contents of both standards include definition, classification, general requirements, test method, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transport and storage.
