Japan to Align Maritime Transport Rules for Dangerous Goods with IMDG Code 2022 Edition

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLITT) is consulting on the proposed updates of the Regulations for Transport and Storage of Dangerous Goods by Ships and the Standards Concerning the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Ships, aiming to align Japan’s rules for the transport of dangerous goods (TDG) by ships with the international rules - International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) 2022 Edition. The consultation will end on November 28, 2022. Once approved, they are expected to be officially released in late December 2022 and take effect from January 2023.

Japan to Ban 56 PFOA-related Compounds

On July 7, 2022, the Central Environment Council under Japanese Ministry of Economy issued a notice that 56 perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-related compounds will be designated as Class I Specified Chemical Substances controlled under Chemical Substance Control Law (CSCL) after the public consultation in March 2022 and 4 rounds of discussions within the Council afterwards.

[Updated] Japan Proposes to Add Additional Existing Substances into the FCM Positive List

On April 26, 2022, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan announced to start the nomination for existing substances in the FCM Positive List again. The application can be submitted before July 16, 2022. MHLW emphasized that this would be the last opportunity to submit a request for an existing substance to be included in the FCM Positive List.
