Updates: On May 30, 2022, the Australia Government published a notice to announce the publication of 9 completed evaluations. Compared with the draft versions that were issued for public consultation (due by March 28, 2022), there are some changes in the completed versions. For example, the evaluation statement of 1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triamine (melamine) (CAS No.108-78-1) has been amended to explain hazard information. Click here to learn more. Besides, the evaluation for "Compounds of dimethyltin (EVA00076)" has not been completed at this time to allow further consideration of information submitted as part of public consultation process.

On January 31, 2022, the Australia Government published a notice to seek public feedback on 10 draft evaluation statements, covering 1,417 industrial chemicals that are:
identified as possibly posing a risk to humans and/or the environment;
unlikely to require further regulation in Australia to manage environmental risks; and
not considered for in-depth evaluation because they are not commercially active in Australia.
These evaluations are part of Australia’s Evaluation Roadmap and are listed in the accompanying Rolling Action Plan, which are completed under the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019. Each type of the evaluated chemicals has its own draft evaluation statement, mainly covering the contents, e.g., chemicals in the evaluation, parameters of the evaluation, summary of the evaluation, and conclusions. The consultation will end on March 28, 2022.
According to these draft evaluations, there are several kinds of recommendations, including:
1. For the following 6 types of industrial chemicals, the Safe Work Australia (SWA) should update the Hazardous Chemical Information System (HCIS) to add new classifications relevant to work health and safety, and the information in the evaluation statement should be used by a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) at a workplace (such as an employer) to determine the appropriate control under the relevant jurisdictions and Work Health and Safety laws.
- 1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triamine (melamine)
- 1,6-Octadiene, 7-methyl-3-methylene-(Myrcene)
- 2,5,8,11,14-Pentaoxapentadecane (tetraglyme)
- Octynoic and nonynoic acid esters
- Trimellitates (high molecular weight)
2. For the 3 types of the evaluated industrial chemicals below, there are no recommendations since their identified environmental risks are considered to be manageable within existing risk management frameworks, which are provided that all requirements are met under environmental, workplace health and safety and poisons legislation as adopted by the relevant state or territory.
- Chemicals that are unlikely to require further regulation in Australia to manage environment risks
3. For chemicals in this draft evaluation - Chemicals that are not considered for in depth evaluation - Not commercially active in Australia, it’s clarified that these chemicals do not require further evaluation or regulation to manage any potential risks associated with industrial use of the chemicals since they are not likely to be introduced for industrial use in Australia. Although the chemicals are unlikely to be in use in Australia, the ‘inactive’ determination does not impact their status in the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC) as ‘listed’ chemicals. Australia also calls on industry to provide relevant information (such as the use and the volume of use) of this type of chemicals.
