Australia Extends Deadline for Evaluation of Dechlorane Plus under AICIS

The Australian Government announced on June 30, 2022 that the timeframe for the evaluation of Dechlorane Plus (DP) under AICIS has been extended to June 30, 2023 (see notice1). This evaluation was previously planned to be completed in June 2022.

DP, as a flame retardant that persists in the environment for a very long time and accumulates in humans and wildlife, is proposed to be listed in Annex A to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)*. Currently, the UK is conducting a long-term aquatic toxicity study of DP. In order to enable consideration of the outcome of this critical study, the Australian Government extends the deadline for the evaluation of DP.

*The eighteenth meeting of the POPs Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention is scheduled to take place from 26 to 30 September 2022 in Rome, Italy. The Committee proposes to adopt the draft risk management evaluation for DP and UV-328, and to decide whether DP should be listed in Annex A to the convention. For more details, see DP and UV-328 Step Closer to Global Bans.
