The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is currently consulting on listing short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in IChEMS Register Schedule 7. If adopted, stringent risk management measures will apply. Comments are welcome before November 8, 2023. This proposed scheduling decision is expected to take effect on July 1, 2024.

According to the consultation paper, target substances in the class of SCCPs are CAS No. 85535‐84‐8, 68920‐70‐7, 71011‐12‐6, 85536‐22‐7, 85681‐73‐8, and 108171‐26‐2. They are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) included in the Stockholm Convention. Prohibitions will be imposed on the import, export, manufacture, and use of target SCCPs (whether on its own or in mixtures) or articles (products) containing target SCCPs, with limited exceptions for unintentional trace contamination, research, disposal, and for articles (products) in use prior to the date of effect of the decision.

IChEMS and IChEMS Register

IChEMS is a national approach to managing chemical use, storage, handling and disposal in Australia, which will provide more consistent regulation and make it easier for the industry to choose less harmful chemicals. As per the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management (Register) Act, industrial chemicals circulated in Australia will be listed on the IChEMS Register in 7 schedules based on their environmental risks.
