China Issues Supplementary Classification Guidance of Aquatic Environmental Hazards

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) and the National Standardization Administration (SAC) released on 17 Sep the standard GB 36700 —“Guidance on hazard classification to the aquatic environment”. GB 36700 is divided into eight parts (GB 36700.1-2018 ~ GB 36700.8-2018), including: 

  1. Introduction;

  2. Harmonized classification of method

  3. Aquatic toxicity;

  4. Degradation;

  5. Bioconcentration;

  6. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR);

  7. Classification of metals and metal compounds; and

  8. Guidance on transformation/dissolution of metals and metal compounds in aqueous media.

GB 36700.1-2018 ~ GB 36700.7-2018 is formulated in accordance to Annex 9 of UN GHS Rev.4 and will be effective from 1 April 2019, while GB 36700.8-2018 relates to Annex 10 of GHS and will come into effect on 1 Jan 2019. They are all recommended to use as a supplementary classification guidance to aquatic environmental hazards. GB 30000.28 (Rules for classification and labelling of chemicals - Part 28: Hazardous to the aquatic environment) is the basic standard for identifying substances hazardous to the aquatic environment.
