On 30th May, China National Coatings Industry Association issued a notice [1] seeking public feedback on the new draft of the national standard: Technical Requirement for Low VOC Content Coatings Product, which was revised from the internal draft released last August (Chemlinked News [2]). The terms and definitions, content limits, test methods, determination rules and signs of coating products with low VOC content were stipulated in the standard draft. The consultation will end on 21st June.
This standard applies to the assessment of low VOC content coatings products. These products were divided into four categories in the standard:
water-based coatings
solvent-based coatings
solventless coatings
radiation curable coatings
The content limits for specific application coatings can be found in these categories, such as architectural coatings, wood coatings and vehicle coatings, etc. It is worth mentioning that aerospace coatings, nuclear power coatings, and military coatings are not covered by this standard.
In order to facilitate the implementation of the standard, the classification of the standard is as consistent as possible with the mandatory national standards in the corresponding fields, and the VOC content limits also refer to the corresponding mandatory national standards. According to the standard, the national standards that regulate the hazardous substances in coatings for specific applications are also coming soon.
Once implemented the new standard should aid the sustainable development of the coatings industry and environmental protection. The new standard should also have a positive impact on urban ambient air quality. Suggestions need be submitted using the public feedback form downloaded from the notice page (annex 4), and be sent to [email protected].
