Clothing Brands to Release List of Hazardous Chemical Substances to Eliminate

The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) group announced that a list of targeted hazardous chemical substances used in the textile industry has been established and will be released in the fourth quarter of 2013.

As one of the key component of the ZDHC program, the list is created to aid the action plans for research and phase out of hazardous chemicals used in the supply chain of the textile industry.

The ZDHC group also intends to collaborate with university researchers to explore effective alternatives to perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs). PFCs are commonly used in the waterproofing process in textile products. Some PFCs are found to have high toxicity and hence create considerable environmental and health concerns.

In addition, great effort was seen in development of ZDHC program during the third quarter of 2013 in the Asian region, especially China. The ZDHC Generic Audit Protocol for effective environmental performance and on-going enhancement was established and two pilot programs were carried out in Bangladesh and China. The Institute for Sustainable Communities’ Environmental Health and Safety (ISC-EHS) Academy and the China National textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) were also involved in co-organizing training and symposium in both English and Chinese.

ZDHC group was formed in 2011 and its membership has now increased from the 6 original members to 16 and 2 associate members. A number of leading apparel and footwear brands such as Adidas, Nike, Puma, H&M and Esprit have already committed to ZDHC program. The ultimate goal of the program is to create a new and higher standard of environmental performance throughout the supply chain of the textile industry.
