India Consults on Draft Standard for Toluene Diisocyanate Mixture

India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) published a draft standard prescribing the requirements and the methods of sampling and test for toluene diisocyanate (TDI-80).

On August 2, 2021, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) published a draft standard prescribing the requirements and the methods of sampling and test for toluene diisocyanate (TDI-80), which is a mixture of 80 percent 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and 20 percent 2,6- toluene diisocyanate. This proposed standard covers Type I (for low acidity) of toluene diisocyanate (TDI-80). The public consultation ended on September 1, 2021.

TDI-80 is mainly used in the production of polyurethane foam and other polyurethane products including elastomers, synthetic leather, coated fabrics, paints, and adhesives. According to this draft standard, TDI-80 would need to meet the following requirements in Table 1.

Anti-oxidant or/and Performance Additives*

* Name of the Anti-oxidant or/and Performance Additives, their levels and analysis methods shall be provided on mutual agreement between buyer and seller.

The BIS also stipulated that TDI-80 shall be packed in an appropriate drum, tanker, ISO container, or other container agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier. Each container shall be securely closed and shall bear the following information:

  • Name of the material;

  • Name of the manufacturer;

  • Month and year of manufacture;

  • Lot or batch number;

  • Net weight and POISON [red label, printed on white background conforming to IS 1260 (Part I)/ GHS]

Moreover, each container should be marked with the minimum cautionary notice as the follows: “KEEP WELL CLOSED AND PROTECTED FROM LIGHT. TOXIC. AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN”
