India is consulting on a revision to the Classification of Dangerous Goods (Third Revision of IS 1446). It lists the proper shipping name, UN number, class or division, and the subsidiary hazard of 2,336 dangerous goods that are most commonly transported in India. The consultation period will end on September 20, 2022.
IS 1446 was first published in 1959 and revised in 1985 and 2002 respectively according to the different versions of UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods-Model Regulations (UN RTDG-MR). The third revision is proposed to adopt the 22nd revised edition of UN RTDG-MR that was published in 2021.
The standard classifies dangerous goods according to the hazards they present and lists the corresponding UN number to facilitate national and international transport. However, packaging and transportation provisions of dangerous goods are not covered in this standard, which are addressed in separate Indian Standards, including:
IS 11466 (Part 2): 1985 Guidelines for packing, stowage and securing of cargo inside the freight containers: Part 2 dangerous goods; and
SSD-II/01/18008 Transportation of dangerous goods-Guidelines.
