India QR Code Application on Electronic Products

India amends Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules to allow electronic products to declare certain information through QR codes.

On July 14, 2022, India’s Department of Consumer Affairs issued the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second Amendment) Rules 2022 to allow electronic products to make certain mandatory declarations through QR codes for one year. It took effect immediately.

Previously, all the prepackaged commodities including the electronic products were required to declare all the mandatory declarations on the package as per the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities), Rules 2011. After revision, the name of the manufacturer, packer or importer, as well as the telephone number & e-mail address still need to be declared on the package itself, while the other elaborated information can be conveyed to the consumer in the digital form through the QR code.

More specifically, the information that can be displayed via scanning the QR code includes:

  • address of the manufacturer or packer or importer,

  • common or generic name of the commodity,

  • size and dimension of the commodity, and

  • customer care details except for the telephone number & e-mail address.
