India Rescinds Quality Control Orders for Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline

Manufacturers are no longer required to apply for BIS certification for Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline.

The Indian government has officially withdrawn the Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for 3 chemicals, effective from July 23, 2025.

This decision, announced by the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals (DCPC), rescinds the QCOs for the following 3 chemicals issued in 2019:

DCPC stated that the withdrawl is deemed necessary to meet the public interest after consulting with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

With the withdrawal of these QCOs, manufacturers will no longer need to obtain a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards or ensure their products bear the Standard Mark.

Background

The Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline (Quality Control) Orders were originally issued in August 2019. These QCOs mandated that manufacturers of these chemicals obtain BIS certification, ensuring that the products met specific Indian Standards.

The implementation dates for these QCOs have seen several postponements since their initial notification. For instance, the latest enforcement dates was extended until August 3, 2025.
