India Seeks Comments on Revising Varnish Stoving Standard

The proposed standard has specified maximum limit for lead and added a precautionary note in the marking clause.

India published a consultation to revise standards for varnish stoving, which is used for the protection and decoration of metal surfaces. The draft, which was released on September 16 by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), established requirements and methods of sampling and testing for varnish stoving. The comment date is due by November 25, 2022.

Considering the adverse impact lead has on human health, the draft has specified its maximum limit at 90 ppm. A suitable precautionary note has been added in the marking clause in order to prevent unforeseen events. Click here for more details.

Once approved, the standard will be the second revision of the varnish stoving specification. It was originally published in 1952 and the first revision was done in 1971.
