Korea GHS Classification Criteria Updated for “Corrosive to Metals

South Korea’s classification criteria for “Corrosive to Metals" was updated. Classification and labeling and UN Number of some substances were updated.

On 26th of Aug 2016 South Korea updated the GHS classification criteria as well as the classification and labeling information of some substances by NIER Announcement 2016-15. The updates became effective immediately after the issuance of the announcement. 

The details of the updates are summarized as below.

(1) For section "2.16 Corrosive to Metals" in the Appendix 1 of "Standards for Classification and Labeling of Chemical Substance and Material Safety Data Sheet", the classification criteria for Category 1 is updated. The update specifies that substances corrosive to skin (Category 1) shall be classified as “metal corrosive Category 1(H290)” when no data is available to approve it is corrosive to metals (this only applies to liquids).

(2) Classification, labeling and UN Number were updated for some previously designated toxic, restricted, banned and precaution chemicals as specified in Appendix 4 of NIER Announcement 2016-15. Please download the updating details of substances here.

South Korea revised the Standards for Classification and Labeling of Chemical Substances and Material Safety Data Sheet by Public Notice No.2016-19 in Apr 2016 to align with UN GHS Rev.4. Classification, labeling and SDS preparation conducted in accordance with the Public Notice No.2013-37 (the precursor of Public Notice No.2016-19) are acceptable until April 6, 2017 (CL news).
